In the current rainy weather affecting the Maldives, 15 houses in Ha. Muraidhoo suffered various degrees of damage during yesterday's squall.

Abdul Kareem Ali, Deputy President of Muraidhoo Council, told "One" today that two houses in the island have been damaged to the extent that they are completely unusable. He said a total of 15 houses have reported various levels of damage.

"The people living in those two houses have temporarily moved to their relatives' homes. We've provided temporary solutions to the damaged houses. We've fixed roofs, and with people coming out to help, three or four houses have received temporary repairs," Kareem said.

Kareem stated that the squall also caused significant damage to the Muraidhoo Council office roof. This includes damage to a 75-inch TV in the council's meeting room, two CPUs, the entire ceiling coming down, destruction of ceiling-mounted lights, and uncertainty about whether the air conditioner will still work.

"There's no guarantee that any of these things will work. When we tried to salvage these items, water was still dripping from the ceiling. We've managed to repair the council office roof to a workable condition by around 9:00. MTCC provided us with roofing sheets, and we've used those to do the repairs," Kareem explained.

The Deputy President also mentioned that it's difficult to give an exact figure for the financial loss to the council office. He added that they are closely monitoring the situation of Muraidhoo residents and continuing to provide necessary assistance to the people.

In relation to this incident, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar posted on X last night, stating that the roofs of three residential houses and the building housing the council office were blown off in yesterday evening's squall.

"With the help of the island council, residents, police, and MTCC, two of these houses have been temporarily covered, making them habitable for the night," the Minister said.

"The council says that as soon as the office is brought to a workable condition, they will report the damage to the houses to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and proceed with seeking government assistance through the established procedures," the Minister added.

The Minister also expressed satisfaction with the social cohesion demonstrated by the people in such situations.
