Hulhumalé has suffered significant damage following a powerful storm that struck the area on Thursday. According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, wind speeds reached up to 52 mph in Hulhumalé since 3:00 a.m. - one of the strongest gusts recorded in recent days.
The storm uprooted a large tree along Hulhumalé’s Fithuroanu Magu, blocking access near One Avenue and Ocean Front. Additionally, a bus stop in Phase 2 sustained heavy damage, while several motorcycles were reported damaged by falling debris.
Across the country, strong winds were also recorded, with speeds of 61 mph being the highest in the last 24 hours. B. Dharavandhoo experienced gusts of 58 mph, while Hanimaadhoo saw winds up to 54 mph.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days, particularly in the northern and central regions. A yellow alert remains in effect from Shaviyani Atoll to Faafu Atoll, while a white alert has been issued for northern atolls.
Residents are advised to exercise caution as severe weather conditions continue.
