Children’s Ombudsperson Niumath Shafiq has raised concerns over the reduction of powers granted to the office under existing laws, urging amendments to strengthen its mandate.
Speaking before Parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee, Niumath highlighted that the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Juvenile Justice Act require revisions. She noted that the Juvenile Justice Act omits certain powers initially conferred on the Ombudsperson and removes provisions enabling the office to hold government agencies accountable as an independent body.
She also stressed the need to fully implement provisions of the Child Rights Act and confirmed consultations with the Attorney General regarding necessary amendments.
Meanwhile, the committee has approved President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s proposal to extend Niumath Shafiq’s tenure by five years, following the expiry of her term on 23 July. The matter was referred to the committee on 14 July and endorsed yesterday.
