President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for recognition of the collective efforts behind the development of the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), stating that credit should not be limited to a single administration.

Speaking on the “Rayyithunnaa Eku” podcast, President Dr Muizzu described ongoing debate over who deserves credit for the terminal as meaningless, noting that the airport’s growth has been a multi-government effort. He traced its origins to President Ibrahim Nasir's administration, with subsequent contributions from President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, President Abdulla Yameen, and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

He acknowledged that the new terminal project officially began during President Yameen’s term and further progressed under President Solih’s government. Upon taking office, President Dr Muizzu said his administration undertook the remaining work, completing the project in about a year and a half.

According to the President, the terminal was only 54 percent complete at the time he assumed office. Critical areas, such as duty-free zones and commercial spaces, had not yet been built or handed over to contractors. He added that significant infrastructure within the terminal, including essential operational components, still required attention.

President Dr Muizzu noted that his initial goal was to open the terminal by October, but due to delays, it will now be inaugurated on Independence Day. He reiterated that while each administration has played a part, his focus is on completing the work and ensuring the terminal is fully operational.
