President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has underscored the importance of investing in Maldivian youth to ensure long-term national stability and growth, as the country prepares for the challenges of an ageing population.
In a statement marking World Population Day on July 11, the President reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for young people. He highlighted key priorities such as flexible work opportunities, affordable housing, accessible childcare, and equitable access to quality education and healthcare.
The President also called for improved reproductive health services, counselling, and comprehensive healthcare support to empower youth to make informed life decisions.
Emphasising the need for strategic foresight, President Muizzu advocated for a comprehensive population policy tailored to the country’s demographic realities. He noted on social media that projections show one-fifth of the population will be over the age of 65 by 2062, underlining the urgency of preparing the younger generation to meet the demands of an ageing society.
World Population Day is observed annually to raise awareness of global population issues and promote sustainable development.
