Prosecutor General’s Office has stated that Hawks cannot currently be charged in the stolen cigarette smuggling case due to insufficient evidence.
Responding to concerns raised at Parliament’s 241 Committee by Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, Public Prosecutor Ahmed Shafiu confirmed that while the case remains active, there is not yet enough evidence to proceed with charges against Hawks Fuel. However, he noted that prosecution remains possible if more evidence emerges.
Nazim criticised delays in the case, highlighting concerns over internal compromises within institutions and denying that committee members were involved in any wrongdoing. He also expressed frustration over the stalled money laundering investigation linked to the case.
Shafiu assured that any agreements with foreign parties related to the investigation include safeguards to ensure cooperation and protect the integrity of the process.
