Ministry of Housing has announced that it is working with the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) to address legal loopholes found in land allotment agreements signed under the previous administration.

The issue emerged after the government made changes to the land use plan and reallocated plots to allottees. During a review of existing agreements, the ministry found that some violated the Maldives Land Act.

According to Section 11(a) of the Act, land or housing can only be allotted to those without existing property in their name. However, under the previous land owner scheme, some plots less than 600 square feet were acquired from Male’, Hulhumale’, and Villingili without proper adherence to the law.

The ministry noted that much of the land acquired from Hulhumale’ has already been handed over and construction has begun, making a full resolution through agreement amendments unlikely. To avoid delays, the ministry has decided to revise the agreement clauses to include accurate registration details and location of the newly allotted plots.

The ministry said it remains committed to resolving the matter lawfully and ensuring fairness for all parties involved.
