More than 1,200 young people have applied to join the first round of training under the Maldives National Service programme.

Launched by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the programme aims to build a patriotic, responsible, and healthy generation - physically, mentally, and spiritually.

According to the Ministry of Defence, 1,244 youths have applied, and all who meet the necessary health and physical requirements will be allowed to take part. Applicants will be sorted based on the format they applied in, and training will begin in batches without delay once each round is completed.

The ministry added that all applicants will be informed about available training spaces. Those selected for the first round and those listed as reserves will be given a full briefing on the process.

Selection will take place across the country, allowing applicants to attend the process at the most convenient location.

The President previously said the National Service Programme will help shape a well-trained and disciplined generation. All eligible participants will receive an allowance from the day they join, and the Defence Ministry has been designated as the lead agency for implementation.
