Mauroof Jameel, Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), has announced his retirement, less than seven months after taking up the role. He was appointed to the post on 22 December last year following the resignation of his predecessor, Ibrahim Fazul, amid controversy over land allotments.

While there has been no official statement from HDC, several employees have reportedly been informed of Mauroof’s decision. Attempts to reach him for comment have been unsuccessful.

Mauroof has had a long and influential career in urban development, having played a key role in the design and development of Hulhumalé. He previously served as Director General of the Hulhumalé Development Unit during President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration and later held senior roles at HDC and the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC). He also served as Minister of Construction and Public Infrastructure during Gayoom’s final term.

In recent years, Mauroof has been active in the field of architectural heritage.
