National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has revealed that MVR 1 million was spent on treating endometriosis patients between January and June 2025.
Speaking at the Parliament's Social Affairs Committee, NSPA CEO Heena Waleed stated that 14 individuals had received financial support for endometriosis treatment both locally and abroad. “Since last year, we have facilitated overseas treatment and surgeries for endometriosis through Aasandha, as well as supported treatment within the Maldives,” she said.
A letter from Endo Advocates founder Fathimath Shahnaz, submitted to the committee, highlighted concerns such as the lack of dedicated specialists at IGMH’s endometriosis clinic and in partner hospitals abroad. In response, IGMH Medical Director Dr Aiminath Zaiba Ahmed clarified that while there is no formal medical specialty in endometriosis, certain gynaecologists develop expertise through focused experience.
She acknowledged that some local doctors have a strong interest in the condition and that similar models are seen in India. However, Dr Zaiba noted the commercial influence on such services and said efforts are underway to expand the IGMH endometriosis clinic, with further staff training planned for next month.
Aasandha began covering IVF, PCOS, and endometriosis treatment in December 2023. While there is no cure for endometriosis, its symptoms can be managed through medication or surgery. The condition, which affects tissue growth outside the uterus, can cause intense pain and fertility challenges.
