A group of fishermen from AA. Ukulhas has found what is believed to be a 15 kg piece of ambergris while out on a coastal fishing trip.
Ahmed Shaheem, who found the suspected ambergris, told "One" today that it was discovered yesterday evening.
"My friends and I were out on a dinghy for coastal fishing when we found the ambergris. It's estimated to weigh about 15 kilos," he said.
Shaheem said they found it between the reef and Thoddoo after setting out from Ukulhas.
He mentioned that they haven't yet reported the find to any relevant authorities. The ambergris was left as it was found, and islanders confirm it to be ambergris.
Shaheem said they haven't started efforts to sell it yet. He added that they would sell it after considering offers based on the price per gram proposed by potential buyers.
Ambergris has been found before in the Maldives, both near islands and during fishing trips. In 2014, a fishing party from Sh. Feevah found a 300 kg piece of ambergris. Another group from the same island found a 50 kg piece in 2019.
In 2016, a group from HDh. Kumundhoo found a 47 kg piece of ambergris, while in 2017, people disposing of garbage on the beach in Sh. Funadhoo found an 18 kg piece.
