Former President and former Speaker of the People's Majlis Mohamed Nasheed has said that changing Supreme Court judges with every change of government is a big mistake and that the system needs to be changed to prevent this.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has investigated a disciplinary case against Judge Azmiraldha Zahir and Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir on allegations of influencing the release of Dr. Ismail Lateef, Azmiraldha's husband and a doctor at IGMH, who was detained by the Criminal Court in a case against him. After investigating, JSC decided to send a recommendation to the Majlis to dismiss the two judges as the disciplinary case was proven.
As requested by JSC, today's Majlis session passed the dismissal of Azmiraldha and Mahaz from their positions as Supreme Court judges.
Regarding this, President Nasheed said in a post on X today that it is very unfortunate that new leaders feel the need to change judges every time the government changes, and that changing judges whenever the President wants is not what the Constitution envisioned.
"However, this Constitution has been shaped, contrary to what was hoped, into a presidential system like a monarchy. In 2008, the Supreme Court had to be formed with the implementation of the new Constitution," Nasheed said.
Nasheed said that after the presidential elections of 2013, 2018, and 2023, every government has changed judges, which is a very big shame and mistake. He also said that the system needs to be changed to prevent this from happening.
