The People's Majlis has rejected a resolution submitted claiming that the state media Public Service Media (PSM) is broadcasting news illegally and in a biased manner.

The resolution was submitted to today's Majlis session by MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo) of Galolhu North constituency.

The resolution stated that PSM's purpose is to remain a national media that provides services to all regions of the country, with editorial independence and free from influence, within the general principles and policies set by law.

It said the law mandates PSM to build informed and aware citizens in all areas, and its policies include ensuring equal opportunities for individuals and groups.

However, the resolution claimed that instead of working as a national media, PSM has completely removed editorial independence as stated in the law, by not providing information and news on religious, economic, social, political and other important national issues to the public, and not giving equal opportunities to individuals and groups.

The member said he submitted the resolution for debate in the Majlis as PSM's repeated daily violations of the law encourage a culture of disregarding the law, which is a matter of national interest.

When voting was held on accepting the resolution, out of 58 members present, 12 members including MDA, PNC and independent members along with MDP members voted to accept it. However, the resolution was rejected with 45 PNC members voting against it.
