Home Ministry has launched an investigation after an inmate was freed without a Presidential Pardon from the President, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

In April, 200 inmates were shown clemency under the constitutional authority of the President.

Today, the Home Ministry announced on Twitter that they are they are investigating the release of an inmate that was not given a presidential pardon along with those who did receive it. And the Correctional Service has been ordered to take the administrative steps after an investigation.

The Ministry also said that they have charged the Maldives Police Service to conduct an investigation into the matter.

Home Ministry said that the inmate in question is back in custody as part of the investigation.
