Maldives Immigration has issued a travel advisory notifying that entry with Israeli passports is banned until Israel ceases its attacks aimed at the Palestinian people, following an amendment to the law.

As a measure against Israel's inhumane acts and genocide targeting Palestinians, the People's Majlis passed an amendment to the Immigration Act banning entry of Israeli citizens with Israeli passports to the Maldives. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu immediately ratified the bill.

The travel advisory issued by Immigration today states that entry with Israeli passports will be banned from today following the amendment to the Immigration Act. The amendment was also published with the advisory.

The bill to amend the Immigration Act to ban entry with Israeli passports was submitted to the Majlis on May 30, 2024 by opposition MDP member by opposition MDP member Meekail Ahmed Naseem of Galolhu South constituency.

His bill proposed adding a clause to Article 8(a) of the Immigration Act to include "People carrying Israeli passports (including those carrying passports of other countries in addition to Israeli passports)" as persons not permitted to enter the Maldives.

However, during the committee stage, his proposed amendment was changed. Mohamed Shahid, member for Hulhudhoo constituency, proposed including in the law that entry to the Maldives with Israeli passports is prohibited until Israel stops its inhumane acts against Palestinians that have been ongoing since October 7, 2023. This proposal was seconded by Mohamed Ismail, member for Vilimale' constituency.

The committee passed this proposal unanimously by the members present at the time.

After debate on the committee's decision on the parliament floor today, the amendment brought by the committee was passed without changes by unanimous vote of 83 out of 84 members present at today's session.
