Two senior officials of the Thalassaemia Centre have been dismissed following growing dissatisfaction with the centre’s services.

Ahsan Hussain, the former Director of the Thalassaemia Centre, and Faisal Ibrahim, the centre's Public Health Coordinator, were both removed from their positions last night. The Health Ministry has not issued a statement regarding the decision.

The dismissals come in the wake of a public protest staged by blood donors and parents of children affected by thalassaemia. Demonstrators gathered outside the Thalassaemia Centre on Saturday night, demanding immediate action and the resignation of key officials.

Responding to these concerns, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu personally visited the Thalassaemia Centre on Sunday and ordered urgent reforms. The government has since announced several measures to improve the centre’s services, including:

  • Extending MBS service hours at the hospital
  • Appointing a Director General for MBS
  • Implementing internal management changes
  • Addressing filter issues at the facility
  • Recruiting additional doctors to enhance patient care
  • Speeding up the relocation of services to a new building due to the poor condition of the current MBS facility
