Former Police Commissioner Ahmed Faseeh has been appointed as the new Immigration Controller of the Maldives. The announcement was made by President’s Office spokeswoman Hina Waleed in a post on X last night, confirming that Faseeh will hold the position at State Minister level.
Faseeh has an extensive 23-year career in the police force and previously served as Police Commissioner under former President Mohamed Nasheed. He retired from the role in 2012 but later joined the Police Board on 12 December 2022, following the enactment of the new Police Act.
Faseeh’s appointment comes after the sudden removal of his predecessor, Shamaan Waheed. A government official confirmed that Shaaman was dismissed yesterday due to an ongoing case, though no official statement has been released on the matter.
Meanwhile, the police are investigating reports that some immigration employees have been misusing their official positions for personal gain, particularly in relation to migrant workers. Last night, a police raid led to the arrest of three individuals, though their identities have not been disclosed. It is still unclear whether Shamaan Waheed is linked to the case.
There have been previous allegations that immigration officials were involved in extorting money from foreign workers. The police have previously investigated similar cases, and authorities have stated that more details about the current investigation will be revealed as it progresses.
