A defamation case has been filed against MDP activist Mariyam Zubair (Mandhy) in connection with comments she made about President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's son, Umair Mohamed Muizzu.
The case was submitted to the Civil Court today by "Rehendhi Chambers", a law firm run by former Attorney General Azima Shakoor, on behalf of the President's wife, Sajidha Mohamed.
In a statement released by Azima, she said that Mandhy's comments about Umair have created a situation that endangers Umair's mental and physical well-being, and has caused significant damage to his education and future.
The lawsuit was filed because Mandhy's comments violated the rights and dignity guaranteed by the Child Rights Protection Act and the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, and infringed upon the right to protection of name and reputation guaranteed by law, according to Azima's statement.
During an MDP protest, Mandhy alleged that vaping was banned in the Maldives because it was revealed that the President's son uses vape, and that this was a result of improper upbringing of children.
However, First Lady Sajidha has denied this. Madam Sajidha stated that her son Umair has never used tobacco or vape.
Therefore, in defense of her children's rights, Madam Sajidha decided to file lawsuits against Mandhy, as well as the MDP and its Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.
