Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has urged authorities to take strict action against MDP over remarks made during a recent protest.
The controversy began after MDP party worker Mariam Zubeir reportedly made derogatory comments about the president’s son during a protest on Wednesday night. The remarks have drawn criticism from both the Election Commission (EC) and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
In a post on X, Speaker Abdul Raheem expressed concern over such behaviour in political activities and called for measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. He stressed that strict action should be taken against those responsible, arguing that false accusations should not be used as a political tool.
The EC, in a statement, reminded political parties to follow national laws, including the Political Party Act and the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act (2013). It condemned the use of baseless accusations, particularly those affecting children’s well-being. The HRCM also warned against promoting communal hatred, stating that political activities should remain within legal and ethical boundaries.
