It has been decided to resume the operations of AgroNat Corporation, a state company that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet had previously decided to dissolve.
The President's Office had stated on September 3, 2024, that the decision to dissolve AgroNat was made in a cabinet meeting on September 1, 2024, as a measure to reduce government expenditure. Later, on December 2, 2024, an AgroNat official told "One" that the company's operations had been halted as of November 30, 2024.
However, during his trip to Huvadhoo Atoll on January 8 this year, President Muizzu stated in a meeting with the people of GA. Nilandhoo that the rumors about AgroNat being dissolved were false.
"We changed AgroNat to a subsidiary company of Maldives Industrial Free Zone (MIDFZ). That's the change we made," the President said.
The President stated that expanding agriculture is an important goal of this government. He added that transferring AgroNat under MIDFZ would further strengthen the company's services.
According to a post by the Agriculture Ministry on the government news portal "sarukaru.mv", President Muizzu has requested the cabinet to review its decision to transfer AgroNat under MIDFZ. As a result, it has been decided to establish AgroNat as a subsidiary company of MIDFZ.
"In this cabinet decision, it has also been arranged for the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare to coordinate Agro National Corporation Limited's work and set targets," the Agriculture Ministry said.
AgroNat was established during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration in 2020 to market products grown by Maldivian farmers and ensure food security in the Maldives. When its operations were halted, the company had 182 employees. AgroNat employees were active in some islands where farming is practiced.
