A motion has been submitted to the People's Majlis (Parliament) seeking the dismissal of Maldives Monetary Authority's Deputy Governor Ahmed Imad.

The matter was submitted to the committee by Dhidhdhoo constituency member Abdul Latheef Mohamed, requesting the committee to advise the President to dismiss Imad from his position as Deputy Governor.

In his letter to the committee, Abdul Latheef stated that by the end of 2023, the country's economy had deteriorated to a point difficult to recover, and the then Governor Ali Hashim had failed to achieve the objectives stated in the law. He added that the main function of MMA, the monetary policy, was not implemented in the most appropriate manner.

The letter also mentioned that when the Public Finance Committee investigated, they recommended the President dismiss the then Governor, which was approved by the Parliament and acted upon by the President.

The letter further stated that while Ali Hashim was failing to fulfill his responsibilities, Imad, as Deputy Governor, did not remind Hashim of these duties, which is a failure to fulfill the Deputy Governor's responsibilities as mandated by law.

Therefore, the letter requested the Parliament to advise the President to dismiss Imad from his position as Deputy Governor due to his reluctance to fulfill his responsibilities.

In response to this letter, MDP member Dr. Ahmed Shamheed of member Dr. Ahmed Shamheed of South Hulhumale' constituency said that the letter seems to suggest Imad should be dismissed because Ali Hashim was previously dismissed.

"There's no mention in this letter of the Deputy Governor violating the code of conduct or committing any offense," Shamheed said.

However, Kelaa constituency member Abdullah Shareef proposed to send the matter to the Parliament floor to vote on advising the President to dismiss the Deputy Governor as stated in the letter. Henveiru North constituency member Ahmed Eyfaan seconded the motion.

The motion was passed with votes from all members except two MDP members, Shamheed and Hanimaadhoo constituency member Abdul Gafoor Moosa.

The matter will now be announced on the Parliament floor and then sent back to the committee for further study.

The Parliament will vote to advise the President after the committee studies the matter and sends a report to the Parliament floor.
