Supreme Court Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir has been summoned to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) tomorrow, and Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir on Monday.
While the Supreme Court had scheduled a hearing on issuing a temporary order to delay the implementation of the constitutional amendment that causes MPs to lose their seats if expelled from their party, the JSC began investigating ethical issues of three Supreme Court judges and suspended them. These include Mahaz and Azmiralda, as well as Justice Husnu Al Suood.
With the JSC suspension, Suood resigned from his position as a judge last week, claiming government interference in the judiciary.
The JSC is investigating two cases involving Azmiralda and Mahaz. One case is the allegation that Azmiralda influenced an arrest warrant for her husband. The other case involves Mahaz and Azmiralda being present when Justice Suood allegedly spoke in "inappropriate language" to former High Court Assistant Registrar Hussain Mohamed Haneef when he was summoned to the Supreme Court.
A JSC official told "One" tonight that Justice Mahaz has been summoned tomorrow and Azmiralda on Monday in connection with this case. However, no time was specified.
The constitutional case regarding the amendment that allows for the removal of MPs' seats was being heard by a full bench of seven judges. With three judges suspended, that case is now on hold. The People's Majlis has also passed a bill to change the court's bench to five judges.
