The Maldives has intervened and submitted a written statement in the case filed at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the rights of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

The case against Myanmar regarding the inhumane acts committed against Rohingya Muslims living in Myanmar was filed at the ICJ by Gambia on November 11, 2019. The Maldives was granted permission to intervene in the case on July 3 last year upon request.

In a statement released today, the Attorney General's Office said that Attorney General Ahmed Usham submitted a written statement to the ICJ last Friday, in line with the role of an intervening party in the case.

"In line with the role of an intervening party in this case, the Maldives' observation focuses on the interpretation of the articles of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Specifically, it highlights the interpretation of the Duty to Punish Genocide under Articles 1, 4, 5, and 6 of the Convention," the AG's Office said.

The AG's Office further stated that the Maldives will always remain steadfast in cooperating with international efforts to seek justice for Rohingya Muslims and to implement the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
