Today's Friday sermon stated that if a fasting person does not abstain from things they should avoid, there is no point in merely abstaining from eaitng.

The Friday sermon on the topic "How a fasting person should behave" said that the main purpose of fasting is to attain piety (taqwa), which includes doing good deeds and avoiding all sins. It stated that fasting is a supreme training in patience, and abstaining from some permissible things that one is accustomed to doing, and that it is an educational lesson in distancing oneself from worldly desires.

The sermon said that the full reward of fasting is obtained by abstaining from sins as well as negative actions, including refraining from using bad words, engaging in such actions, quarreling, and arguing. It also mentioned that Ramadan is the month when Muslims should maintain all their actions in the best manner.

The sermon stated that during Ramadan, one should maintain family ties, help the needy, pray, recite the Quran, perform night prayers, and engage in i'tikaf (seclusion in the mosque). It also mentioned that helping each other with household chores, rather than assigning them to specific people, is particularly rewarding during Ramadan. The sermon also stated that this is a good opportunity for businesspeople to control their prices and gain benefits and profits for the hereafter.

The sermon said that there is no one more unfortunate than a person who fails to benefit from Ramadan before it passes. It quoted a hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) to illustrate this point:

“Verily, this month has presented itself to you. There is a night within it that is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of it has been deprived of all good, and none is deprived of its good but that he is truly deprived.”
