The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has begun investigating the case of Zakiyya Moosa, who was found dead with injuries in N. Holhudhoo.

Yesterday, a protest was held in front of the Holhudhoo Police Station calling for justice for Zakiyya's death. Police used pepper spray against some of the protesters.

In a post on X last night, HRCM said that Zakiyya's close relatives have raised concerns about the progress of the investigation into her death.

"This Commission is investigating how relevant authorities are handling this case. We have obtained information and related documents from the Maldives Police Service and are currently analyzing the information received," HRCM stated.

The police are also seeking assistance from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the investigation into Zakiyya's death.

In a message sent to the media on January 23, police said they are seeking additional opinions for the investigation into Zakiyya's death. As such, police have shared their findings with the FBI and are seeking their assistance.

Police also said that a senior investigative team has visited Holhudhoo to review the case and is working to identify any additional aspects that need to be examined.

Police have stated that the investigation into Zakiyya's death is still ongoing.

Zakiyya, 50, was found dead with injuries on September 10 last year at the Newlife house in Holhudhoo. A knife was also found at the scene where Zakiyya's body was discovered. Police had previously stated that Zakiyya's death was believed to be a suicide and that there was no evidence of anyone else's involvement.

However, after Holhudhoo residents protested citing suspicious circumstances surrounding Zakiyya's death, Chief Inspector of Police Mohamed Samih said at a press conference held at Iskandar Koshi on December 3 that Zakiyya had five wounds on her neck, including deep wounds.

Samih said there were three deep wounds on the left side of the neck and two deep wounds on the right side, as well as a shallow wound in the middle of the neck. He said there were no other wounds on the body.

Samih said that the knife found at the scene where Zakiyya was found dead was a knife used in her home and that the blood on it was Zakiyya's blood.

"We haven't received the results of the fingerprint analysis on the knife yet. But the blood on it is Zakiyya's," Samih said.

Samih said that based on CCTV footage and statements obtained so far in the investigation, there is no evidence to suggest anyone else's involvement in Zakiyya's death. However, he said the investigation is still ongoing.

Samih said that doctors have informed that Zakiyya died from the wounds on her neck. It is understood that one of Zakiyya's neck arteries was severed. And there were marks on her neck indicating knife wounds.

"There were hesitation marks, marks that looked like the knife had been dragged," Samih said.

According to "One", Zakiyya was known to suffer from mental illness. The police have also confirmed this to "One".
