Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has assured that the government will closely monitor the prices of essential commodities during the Holy Month of Ramadan. He emphasised that immediate action will be taken if prices increase.

To ensure affordability, the State Trading Organisation (STO) has already taken steps by importing cashew nuts, selling them at Rs 5 per kg, and addressing the rise in onion prices by selling them at Rs 16 per kg.

Speaking at the ‘Aha Forum’ held last evening, Minister Saeed reiterated President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to preventing price hikes, whether in the islands or the Male’ region. He stated, "We will keep a close watch on prices during Ramadan. If necessary, we will intervene."

The minister further assured that if certain basic commodities cannot be sourced from one country, alternative suppliers will be sought. In urgent cases, the government is prepared to air-freight goods to ensure a stable supply.

Minister Saeed also urged businesses not to increase prices during Ramadan and highlighted the role of the business council in discussing any concerns. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with the private sector to maintain price stability.

Each year, ahead of Ramadan, STO prioritises the import of essential goods expected to experience price fluctuations. The government remains vigilant in ensuring that Maldivians have access to affordable basic commodities during the fasting month.
