Social and Family Development Minister Dr Aishath Shiham has highlighted a rise in the number of families fostering children under state custody.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, the minister emphasised the government’s efforts to ensure children in state care grow up in a family environment. So far, 67 children have been handed to families, either to their immediate relatives or through fostering arrangements.

"So far, 67 children have been handed over to their families. Whether it is personal families or relatives or in fostering that we call it, they have been handed over," Dr Shiham stated.

Additionally, 35 other applications are currently being processed to place children with families. The minister noted that fostering has received positive public response, with entrusted families providing good care for the children.

She also pointed out that the number of children in state custody has decreased by 23 percent compared to 2022. Currently, 139 children remain under state care.
