Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has stated that the Aasandha health insurance system was burdened with billions in debt when President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took office.

Speaking on a programme on MMTV tonight, the minister noted that one of the key steps taken by the current administration to address issues within the healthcare system is the regulation of medicine prices. He pointed out that mismanagement in the system was not only affecting healthcare but also impacting the country’s overall economy.

According to Minister Nazim, a significant portion of Aasandha expenses—around 60 percent—was spent on medicines. He observed that the system had led to increased referrals to foreign hospitals, resulting in financial strain. He also acknowledged public concerns regarding difficulties in procuring medicines and assured that the government is actively listening to complaints and working towards necessary improvements.

The minister further stated that while immediate challenges exist, the government is collaborating with drug providers and policymakers to develop long-term solutions. He expressed confidence that despite the current difficulties, a more efficient and sustainable system would be established in the future.
