The government has announced that tuna cases will be distributed to households in the Greater Malé Region from February 20 in preparation for the upcoming Ramadan.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had earlier pledged that every household would receive a free tuna case during this year’s fasting month. According to an official from MIFCO, the production will come from MIFCO, but the State Trading Organisation (STO) will oversee distribution.
STO has confirmed that only Maldivian households in the Malé area will be eligible for the fish cases. The distribution will take place from May 20 to May 27 at designated times: 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm and 8:30 pm to 11:00 pm. To receive a tuna case, households must provide their electricity meter number, contact details, and the identity card of the recipient. The process will be supervised by the Malé City Council, and any changes to the schedule will be announced accordingly.
Meanwhile, the distribution of tuna cases to atolls began on May 5, with island councils handling the process. STO stated that the work is being carried out in collaboration with various government agencies, MIFCO, Malé City Council, and island councils.
In Malé, tuna cases can be collected from several locations, including the Malé City Council's Public Services Section, the MIFCO Office Ground Floor, the Villimalé Social Centre, the Umar Zahir Building in Hulhumalé Phase 1, and the Youth Centre located in the tenth flat of the Hiyaa Flats in Hulhumalé Phase 2.
Last Ramadan, the government provided 10 kg of rice and 10 kg of flour per household, amounting to 1.6 million kg distributed among 82,000 households.
