Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim has reflected on his past imprisonment under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, describing it as a valuable lesson rather than a hardship.
Speaking at the launch of his biography at Villa College Hall, Qasim shared that he viewed the experience as guidance rather than punishment. He believed it played a positive role in shaping his future and did not see it as something that caused him harm.
Addressing opinions about Maumoon's leadership, Qasim noted that while some considered him a dictator, he did not share that view. He credited Maumoon and his administration for laying the foundation for democracy in the Maldives, suggesting that without their efforts, fundamental rights and freedoms might have been much harder to achieve.
Qasim also praised Maumoon’s intelligence and leadership, stating that his contributions remain evident in the country even today.
