Minister for Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsan, has announced that a new law is being enacted to rename the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) as Maldives Digital Services and grant it legal authority.

Speaking at PSM’s Riyaasee Bayaan Forum, Minister Ihsan outlined plans to establish a data exchange layer to connect all government agencies, ensuring seamless and efficient public services.

"We are transitioning NCIT into Maldives Digital Services under a legal framework. This new authority will oversee the entire digitalisation effort, set standards, and mandate all state agencies to integrate into the digital system within the timeline set by the President," Ihsan said.

He further stated that a service charter would be introduced to classify services, set quality benchmarks, and define expected service delivery times. The government aims to fully digitise the country by 2027, enabling citizens to access services online.

Minister Ihsan also emphasised that digital services should not be solely provided by the government. The private sector will be encouraged to contribute, with clear standards in place for digital services integrated into state operations.

Additionally, the minister highlighted efforts to involve youth in the digital economy, creating opportunities for them to sell products internationally through digital payment systems.
