Minister for Homeland Security Ali Ihsan has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to dismantling drug networks operating in the Maldives' atolls.

Speaking at the Riyaasee Bayaan Forum last night, Minister Ihsan stated that efforts to curb drug-related activities in Fuvahmulah had been successful, with authorities shutting down drug supply hubs and arresting those involved. He further emphasised that targeted operations are being conducted across the atolls to eliminate drug networks.

"We have successfully dismantled a drug network in one atoll this year, including Fuvahmulah. Our goal is to eradicate all such networks across the country," Minister Ihsan said.

He highlighted that drug dealers often disguise their operations behind legitimate businesses, but authorities have ramped up efforts to arrest them under money laundering charges. In 2023, law enforcement agencies intercepted drugs worth MVR 600 million. However, with intensified operations last year, authorities seized drugs valued at MVR 1.2 billion before they could reach the streets.

To further strengthen anti-drug efforts, a special task force comprising police and customs officials has been established to cut off smuggling routes via the sea.
