Maldivian has announced plans to lease a second Airbus A330-200 aircraft as part of its ongoing expansion efforts.

Last month, the airline introduced its first wide-body aircraft, an Airbus A330, which features business, premium economy, and economy class seating. The aircraft has a cargo capacity of 10 tonnes and has already commenced operations to three destinations in China.

Island Aviation Services (IAS), the operator of the airline, issued a notification on Monday seeking to lease another Airbus A330 for a period of five years under an operating lease agreement. According to the notice, the aircraft must include both economy and business class cabins, with at least 20 seats in the business class section.

The introduction of wide-body aircraft is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to enhance the airline’s international services. The president previously announced that the second wide-body aircraft would begin operations in October and would primarily serve European destinations.

This move is expected to strengthen Maldives' aviation connectivity, catering to increasing travel demand and boosting tourism.
