President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on the public to avoid tobacco use to help prevent cancer.
In a post on X marking World Cancer Day, the President highlighted the dangers of smoking, encouraging the public to give up the unhealthy habit.
The Maldivian government has taken various measures to reduce tobacco use, including banning the import of tobacco-based rolling papers such as Rizla on 2nd February. Additionally, amendments to the Tobacco Act have led to increased cigarette prices, causing a rise in demand for cheaper, self-made alternatives like bidi-making materials.
This year’s World Cancer Day theme, "United by Unique", emphasises the personal stories behind the disease, highlighting pain, healing, perseverance, and love. The theme underscores the need for a compassionate and patient-centred approach to cancer treatment to ensure the best health outcomes.
