Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has called on the police to take harassment of female journalists seriously, citing a rise in such incidents, particularly on social media.

In a statement, MJA expressed deep concern over the increasing targeting of women in journalism, warning that these actions not only threaten their safety but also discourage more women from entering the field.

MJA's statement outlined various incidents where female journalists in the Maldives faced harassment from the public, sometimes even anonymous accounts on social media targeting them over their work.

The organisation strongly condemned these acts and urged authorities to take firm action to prevent further harassment. MJA also called on the public to respect journalists' work and ensure a safer environment for women in the profession.
