Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation into allegations against Thinadhoo City Council Mayor, Saud Ali.

Mayor Saud confirmed that an ACC team visited the council office but stated it was unclear why the investigation was initiated, as the order provided no specific details. The visit is reportedly linked to a case involving allegations against the mayor.

Since Mayor Saud is currently in Malé, he informed the ACC via letter that a meeting will be held at the council office on 28 January at 2:30 PM to discuss the matter.

The investigation follows accusations that Thinadhoo was granted city status based on an incomplete and allegedly flawed registry. The claims include allegations that names of deceased individuals and people from nearby villages were added to Thinadhoo's population registry. Despite this, the High Court recently dismissed a petition seeking to overturn the city status granted by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in August last year.

The ACC is also investigating other concerns, including the construction of a monument at Thinadhoo port without council approval, hiring practices within the council, and the withdrawal of MVR 206,293.50 from the council’s bank account.
