Maldives’ national carrier, Maldivian, made aviation history today as its new wide-body aircraft, the Airbus A-330, touched down in the Maldives for the first time. Arriving from Chengdu, China, the inaugural flight carried a large group of Chinese tourists, who were warmly welcomed at Velana International Airport.

As a token of hospitality, the arriving tourists received special gifts along with their luggage, containing essential items for their stay in the Maldives.

The Airbus A-330, featuring 264 seats across three classes—18 in business class, 36 in premium economy, and 210 in economy—marks a significant expansion in Maldivian’s capabilities. The aircraft also has the capacity to transport 10 tonnes of cargo, offering enhanced logistics potential for the nation.

The A-330 embarked on its maiden voyage yesterday, departing from the Maldives for Chengdu. The carrier is set to continue flights to Chengdu at the same fare throughout January. Additionally, flights to Beijing and Shanghai will commence later this month with competitive roundtrip prices:

  • Chengdu: USD 668 (available starting January 31)
  • Beijing: USD 788 (from January 24 to February 1)
  • Shanghai: USD 777 (from January 27 to February 4)
