Minister of State for Domestic Security and Technology, Dr. Mohamed Kinanath, has announced that 70 percent of the Maldives' population now uses eFaas, the country’s digital ID system. Speaking on the state media’s "Raajje Miadhu" programme, Kinanath shared that approximately 240,000 people are currently registered with eFaas, excluding children under the age of 10.
Kinanath emphasized the goal of increasing digital ID usage in the country, citing Estonia’s success with 99% of its population using digital IDs. He expressed that while the Maldives has reached 70 percent, the target should be to eventually achieve 100 percent usage.
Over the past two years, the number of people using eFaas has grown from 40 to 70 percent. Currently, there are 160,700 users of the app.
Kinanath also revealed plans for the upcoming launch of eFaas 2.0, which will include additional features to enhance the system. He noted that eFaas is already being used for a range of services, such as opening accounts at Maldives Islamic Bank, accessing medical records, and booking domestic flights.
The Minister highlighted that many companies are also adopting eFaas, contributing to its growth and integration into daily life in the Maldives.
