The Maduvvari Council has reported to the police and immigration authorities about a case where a large number of expatriate workers arrived on R. Maduvvari island in an attempt to flee from Maldives Immigration.
In a press release today, the Maduvvari Council stated that about 60 expatriate workers from Emerald Resort have come to Maduvvari trying to escape from immigration authorities.
Maduvvari Council President Mohamed Sodhiq told "One" that usually, workers from nearby resorts come to the island for shopping. However, today an unusually large number of expatriate workers arrived on Maduvvari, which prompted them to inform the local police station.
Sodhiq said that as part of immigration operations, biometric data of expatriate workers in Maduvvari was collected, and some were found to be staying illegally. However, he did not confirm the exact number of illegal expatriates.
The police have not yet commented on this case of expatriate workers arriving in Maduvvari to evade immigration authorities.
Immigration has been conducting an operation to collect information on expatriate workers in the Maldives. As of yesterday, Immigration has collected biometric data from more than 25,400 expatriates.
In a post on X yesterday, Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihsan said that in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledge, the work being done under a three-year plan to find a permanent solution to the issue of illegal expatriates in the Maldives will be successfully completed by April 2027.
