Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for an appeal against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom regarding debts owed by the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The bench for the hearing will include Justice Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Justice Aisha Shujoon Mohamed, and Justice Dr Mohamed Ibrahim. The case has been brought to the Supreme Court nine months after the appeal was initially filed.
In June 2023, the Civil Court ruled that Maumoon could not be held personally responsible for the DRP's debt to MTCC, which amounted to MVR 1.1 million for services rendered. Following this decision, MTCC appealed the ruling in the High Court.
The DRP, once the largest opposition party in the Maldives, has faced significant financial troubles, with outstanding debts to various entities. On 13 October 2020, the party's council accused former leader Zaym Maumoon of shifting the party's financial burdens onto its members.
In a related case, the Supreme Court is also hearing a claim by Hub Company Private Limited, which alleges the DRP owes MVR 718,438 for lighting and engineering services provided during Maumoon’s 2008 campaign. While former DRP leader Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir had requested Maumoon’s appearance in court, the Supreme Court did not mandate it.
These cases highlight the financial disputes linked to the DRP's operational history and the ongoing legal challenges for former party leaders.
