Ibrahim Falah, the Parliamentary Group Leader of the People's National Congress (PNC) and MP for Inguraidhoo constituency, has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) would know well that they cannot succeed in the no-confidence motion against Homeland Minister Ali Ihsaan.
The no-confidence motion against Ihsaan was submitted to the Parliament yesterday with the signatures of 12 members of the MDP Parliamentary Group.
MDP’s motion claims the Department of National Registration (DNR), under the Homeland Ministry, was misused to add members to the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC). They also allege corruption in outsourcing expatriate management to a Malaysian company, Bestinet.
MDP also accused Ihsaan of influencing police investigations in the motion.
Regarding the motion, Falah told "One" that the MDP's motion will fail. He assured that no member of the PNC's PG group would support it, and members affiliated with MDA would also not support the motion.
When asked if a whip line would be issued regarding Ihsaan's no-confidence motion, Falah said PNC members would not vote against the whip line.
"That motion won't succeed, we'll make it fail. MDP also knows it can't succeed. No PNC member will support that motion, it's certain it will fail," Falah said.
Falah said that the no-confidence motion MDP submitted against Ihsaan is a political issue. He stated that PNC has not filled out fake forms to increase membership.
MDP, in a press release, stated that they have submitted the case of stealing personal information of citizens and filling out invalid forms to increase PNC membership to the police and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for criminal investigation. They also said they have requested the Prosecutor General (PG) to order these two institutions to investigate these matters.
Furthermore, MDP said they have sent a letter to the Elections Commission (EC) requesting not to process any forms submitted by PNC, to cancel the processed forms, and to re-verify the authenticity of these forms.
EC member Hassan Zakariyya told "One" last Tuesday that more than 300 invalid forms have been submitted by various parties so far.
While MDP has called for an investigation into the invalid forms issue, EC has decided to change the rules for party membership to address the issue of parties submitting invalid forms. They have decided to temporarily suspend form acceptance from the 1st to the 14th of next month and to change the system to allow party membership through eFaas from the 15th of next month.
