Election Commission (EC) of the Maldives has announced plans to conduct by-elections in the first half of the year, following an amendment to hold these elections biannually.

According to EC, a total of 20 ballot boxes are expected to be used, although this figure may change after the re-registration process is complete.

Hasan Zakariyya, former secretary general and current member of the EC, stated that the by-elections, scheduled for February, will involve 11 constituencies. These include HDh. Hirimaradhoo, N. Landhoo, N. Manadhoo, N. Foddhoo, R. Innamaadhoo, B. Goidhoo, HDh. Hanyameedhoo, D. Hulhudheli, L. Gan, Th. Burni, GA. Kanduhulhudhoo, and Male' City.

Zakariyya highlighted that additional ballot boxes would be allocated to specific locations based on expected voter turnout. For example, L. Gan is set to have three boxes, while four are initially planned for Male’ City. However, the final number of boxes in Male’ City will depend on the outcomes of the re-registration process.

He addressed ongoing concerns about the re-registration process, emphasising the importance of voters registering within the designated period. Complaints have been received about voters being incorrectly registered in locations other than where they intend to cast their votes. He urged the 11 candidates contesting the by-elections in 32 constituencies to ensure timely re-registration. Of these, elections will only take place in 11 constituencies, as candidates in the remaining constituencies have already secured their seats unopposed. Ten of the constituencies holding elections are for Women’s Development Committee seats, with one being for a village council.

Efforts are underway to recruit officials to oversee polling activities. Zakariyya noted that it remains challenging to finalise the number of polling officers and eligible voters until re-registration concludes. The by-elections reflect the EC’s commitment to ensuring fair and organised voting processes under the new biannual amendment. The commission continues to encourage active participation from candidates and voters alike.
