Police have begun investigating a case of death threats made against Ahmed Saleem (Maaz Saleem), who served as Deputy Minister of Home Affairs during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's government.

In a message sent to the media tonight, police said that the death threat case was reported last night.

Police stated that they are looking into the necessary aspects of the case. However, they did not provide further details about the incident.

Maaz Saleem, who is now actively involved with the MDP, told "One" tonight that he contacted the police around 11:30 PM after receiving audio messages with death threats via WhatsApp. He said the police told him they would log the case, but didn't ask any further questions.

"When they started threatening further, saying they would send someone to kill me, I called the police again. I asked to meet with an IO at Henveiru Police Station. When I went there last night, there was only a female officer. When she asked why I was there, I said I was there to meet an IO, and she said I came to give a statement for a case. Then she called someone else and handed me the phone. That person told me they couldn't take my statement today and it would be tomorrow," Maaz Saleem said.

Maaz Saleem said that around 10:30 PM tonight, the police called him after he gave an interview to a newspaper mentioning Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihsaan, and asked him to come in at 8:30 PM tomorrow to give a statement. He also mentioned that the WhatsApp death threats came from a single number.

"I'm someone who has previously been the target of a knife attack. I'm a political figure, a high-profile person, and someone who has worked within the police. In such a serious, critical case, after 24 hours, if they're not taking a statement, what kind of police are they? They didn't even investigate a previous case where case where a car hit me. This is not the process that used to be in place," he said.

Maaz Saleem further stated that when a case is reported, the police should investigate it quickly, and if a death threat is carried out after a case has been reported, public criticism would be directed at the police. He also mentioned that he has all the audio messages and the number involved in the case.
