National healthcare scheme, Aasandha, has announced expansion of services to Thailand and United Arab Emirates (UAE) starting Wednesday.
This expansion includes kidney transplant services, fulfilling a presidential pledge to prioritise kidney patients who have faced difficulties due to donor restrictions. Unlike previous countries under the scheme, where first-degree family donors were required, the UAE arrangement allows for non-familial donor transplants.
The second priority group includes patients who have had multiple unsuccessful treatments in the Maldives, India, or Sri Lanka. These cases will be referred to appropriate facilities based on medical team recommendations.
Aasandha covers the costs of medicines, airfare, accommodation, and meals for both patients and donors. An agreement has been established with one hospital in the UAE, with discussions ongoing to expand the network of healthcare providers.
Patients can apply for overseas treatment through the mobile app, online portal, hospital WIRA counters, or Aasandha front office.
