Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal has shared plans for the second wide-body aircraft of the national carrier, Maldivian, to focus on bringing tourists from Europe.

The first wide-body aircraft, which arrived on January 6, is already operating flights to several destinations in China. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that the second aircraft would begin flying in October. Speaking during a recent interview, the Minister mentioned plans to discuss flight arrangements with tour operators at the upcoming ITB Fair. He emphasised the importance of cooperation to ensure the new aircraft effectively serves the European market.

Minister Faisal highlighted that the introduction of wide-body aircraft could enhance connectivity to key international airports across the Maldives, such as those in Addu. He acknowledged the high cost of economy class tickets from Europe with current options and stressed the importance of competitive pricing through the national carrier to attract more tourists.

He also expressed a vision for Maldivian Airlines to become a more profitable state company within the next decade, potentially operating up to 20 wide-body aircraft. The second wide-body aircraft, an Airbus A330-200 leased for five years, will have a capacity of 406 passengers and the capability to travel up to 7,250 nautical miles.
