Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he wants the main opposition party, MDP, to remain strong and that he will not be actively working with either MDP or the Democrats at this time.

Nasheed made these comments in a post on X today, following the return of several former senior MDP members to the party who had previously left to form the Democrats. These include former MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef, former Deputy President Mohamed Shifaz, former PG Leader Ali Azim, and former Policy Committee Chair and former STO MD, Hussain Amru.

"The increase in government revenue after the 2008 election, and the development work and social protection provided to the people from that revenue, demonstrate the benefits of a multi-party system," Nasheed said.

Nasheed stated that he is not opposed to any political party. He added that MDP is like a child to him and he always wishes for it to remain strong.

"And the Democrats, which I joined later, was an opportunity especially for youth to participate in political work. I am not actively working with either of these parties at the moment," Nasheed said.

Nasheed said that although he is not actively involved in the work of a political party, he will not completely distance himself from the political activities of the Maldives.
