Parliament is scheduled to hold an extraordinary sitting on Thursday at 0900hrs to address urgent matters, including appointing members to important commissions and approving cabinet changes.
The agenda includes voting on the appointment of two members each to the Broadcasting Commission and the Election Commission (EC). It also involves sending nominations for two vacant positions in the Human Rights Commission (HRCM), including the vice-president, and two positions in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to committees for approval.
These sittings are being held because the 60-day deadline to appoint members to some commissions has passed. A second sitting is planned for Monday to ensure all appointments are completed on time.
The urgency follows recent changes, such as the removal of EC members Ali Nashath and Mohamed Asif in November. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Mohamed Zahid and Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed to fill the vacant positions. Similarly, the Broadcasting Commission has two vacancies, and the president has submitted 12 nominees for Parliament’s consideration.
The regular Parliament session will begin in February, when President Dr Muizzu will deliver his presidential address.
