Authorities have issued a weather warning over worsening conditions across the nation.
The Maldives Meteorological Service predicts heavy rain starting tonight, lasting for six days, with wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph during storms. Waves could be 3 to 6 feet high, especially in the northern and central atolls.
The central atolls are expected to face the worst conditions, and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is preparing for emergencies. Rough seas and tidal waves will disrupt maritime operations. Southern regions will see westerly and northwesterly winds, while other areas will have northerly and northeasterly winds.
The weather is expected to worsen by Wednesday, following a brief improvement on Sunday. Authorities are advising residents to take precautions, such as placing sandbags at doorsteps, moving valuables to higher ground, and securing loose items. People are also urged to avoid parking in flood-prone areas, stock up on food, and check weather updates before traveling by sea.
Local councils are coordinating protective measures after recent flooding, including the severe flooding in Male’ earlier this month, which caused damage to homes and roads. This weather system adds to the challenges already faced by the Maldives this year. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
