Hassan Latheef has rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) after stepping down as the president of The Democrats.

The Democrats were formed ahead of the most recent presidential election, born out of internal divisions within the MDP. Senior leaders, including former President Mohamed Nasheed, played a significant role in establishing the new party to address these differences.

Hassan Latheef announced his resignation from The Democrats on Sunday. In a statement released on Monday, the MDP welcomed his return, expressing optimism about his renewed commitment to the party.

In addition to Latheef, other notable members of The Democrats have also rejoined the MDP. These include Hussain Amr, the former Managing Director of the State Trading Organisation (STO) under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and The Democrats’ vice-presidential candidate in the recent election, Mohamed Shifaz, a former Minister at the President’s Office, and Ali Azim, a former Member of Parliament representing Central Henveiru.

All these individuals are part of the faction led by Mohamed Nasheed. This faction emerged following internal disagreements within the MDP during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.
