The water pump station at Maafannu Sahara has been renovated and brought back into temporary operation, according to the Ministry of Construction. This comes as part of efforts to address flooding in Malé City during heavy rains.
The Ministry stated that it regularly inspects rainwater pump stations across the city to ensure they are working properly. However, it noted that the Maafannu Sahara pump station had been damaged during work carried out by the Malé City Council while evacuating the Sahara area. The Ministry highlighted that this work was done without consulting or informing them.
With assistance from RCD and STELCO, the pump station has been temporarily repaired and is now operational.
Malé City Mayor Adam Azim acknowledged the concerns about the damage but clarified in a post on X that the pump station had not been functioning for at least five months prior to the incident. He added that the station’s electrical equipment was already damaged and in a non-functional state when the issue occurred.
Efforts to maintain and improve Malé’s water management infrastructure continue as authorities work to address flooding challenges in the capital city.
